Why work with LIFT?
Here are some of the reasons that many companies choose to work with us:
Extensive Experience:
LIFT has helped over 75 companies become Certified B Corporations, recertify as B Corporations, and maximize the value of their B Corp status. Check out our case studies from Patagonia and Ben & Jerry’s.
Deep Knowledge:
Ryan Honeyman (a Partner at LIFT Economy) literally “wrote the book” on B Corporations in 2014. The second edition of The B Corp Handbook, which Ryan coauthored in 2019 with Dr. Tiffany Jana, focuses on the critical need for businesses to authentically commit to greater levels of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
B Lab Expertise:
Emmy Allison, who is part of the LIFT team, worked as Community Success Specialist for B Lab (the non-profit behind the B Corp movement). Emmy helped drive awareness, engagement, and satisfaction for Certified B Corps in the US and Canada. As part of her role, she supported 1,700 B Corps in the technical requirements of B Corp certification. In addition, the LIFT team has a great working relationship with B Lab to help ensure that any questions, comments, or concerns that our clients have during the certification process can be quickly addressed.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion:
As countries around the globe grapple with systemic racism and institutional bias, it is clear that the business community—especially purpose-driven businesses—must take a strong stand towards dismantling racism and anti-Black bias. It is no longer acceptable for business leaders to be silent or neutral. The LIFT team is trained in nonviolent communication and has been heavily involved in anti-racism work over the last several years. We can help you think through what standing up for racial justice might look like at your company.
Best for the World:
LIFT Economy’s current B Corp score is 154.7, placing it in the top 20 highest scoring B Corporations in the world. Our score went from 81 points in 2014 to 134.2 points in 2016 to 154.7 points in 2019. We know how to help companies improve their performance on the assessment.
Best Practice Ideas:
LIFT has access to hundreds of best practice ideas from working with Patagonia, Ben & Jerry’s, Nutiva, and some of the most socially and environmentally conscious businesses on the planet. This includes over 200 interviews we have conducted with B Corp leaders about how they run their businesses. We leverage these resources to help our clients improve their impact.
Train the Trainer:
The LIFT team is so familiar with the B Corp assessment process that we train others on how to start a career in B Corp consulting. For example, LIFT helped advise B Lab US on the creation of a B Impact Fellows program. LIFT also helped advise B Lab UK in the early stages of its creation of the UK “B Leaders” program. To learn more, check out our online self-study course: the Secrets of B Corp Consulting.
Strong Relationships:
The LIFT team has great working relationship with B Lab (the non-profit behind the B Corp movement) to help ensure that any questions, comments, or concerns that our clients have during the certification process can be quickly addressed. LIFT also has close relationships with leaders at a wide variety of Certified B Corporations.
Extended Team:
We can bring in other LIFT Economy partners to support the project if needed.
Helpful Resources:
In the process of helping other companies certify, we have created 70 different policies, templates, guides, and other documents that can help your company improve its score on the B Corp assessment. We provide our clients with access to these documents so they can avoid having to create them from scratch. For example, some of the policies and templates we have on hand can help our clients with:
Creating an annual impact report that documents your company’s social and environmental performance
Creating a formal community service policy and/or commitment to donating a percentage of revenue to charity
Implementing an open-book management process that allows greater transparency with financial/operational data
Formalizing and/or enhancing a professional development policy
Adding social and environmental metrics to annual employee performance reviews
Creating an annual worker satisfaction/engagement survey
Creating a written policy giving preference to local suppliers, socially responsible suppliers, and/or suppliers owned by women and people of color
Benchmarking energy, water, and waste and assessing whether you can increase the amount of renewable energy you consume
Designing a social/environmental assessment program for significant suppliers
And many more.
