Why is this a thing?:
The Next Economy is emergent, somewhat fragmented, and remains culturally invisible to most. We constantly meet people who want to learn transformative alternatives to business as usual capitalism and the new paradigm for enterprise, while others want to be part of a movement using the power of enterprise and coordinated economic action to repair social harm and ecosystem health.
“Online Summits” often reinforce stereotypical norms around “thought leadership” and “email capture” for marketing purposes. Larger "on-life" gatherings are often costly and mean that many of us have to be away from our families, while connecting online allows us to share information, stories, and insights with our diversity of communities without the need for physical travel.
We're interested in testing the approach of an “Online Summit” with modifications from the norm to make it more democratically-driven and transparent because 1) we need more balanced and equitable leadership in our movement, namely from BIPOC & Latinx perspectives, in service to our collective liberation; and 2) we'd all miss out if we didn't tap the wealth of wisdom of our broader community.
Sure, we have some ideas so far, but before we get too carried away with ourselves, we thought we'd bring in voices from our communities as early as possible. This is in part why we are starting with a series of smaller events – we want this to be meaningful to you, to help our beautifully diverse movement see and nourish itself, to cultivate a greater sense community ownership over stewarding our collective braintrust, to forge and deepen trusting relationships, to catalyze transformative action. Rather than just pushing content at you, we're actually really curious to hear from you directly what would be most valuable and transformative for you! We want to make this thing as valuable as it can be to as many people as possible and we figure what better way than to just ask, right?
So we want to open this up and crowdsource the wisdom of our communities to co-create this thing together! And we're looking for ideas/feedback/suggestion at all levels (eg: intentionality, overall design and approach, process/format, ideal dates, content (timely topics, transformative action, support that's needed, etc), ways to integrate art/music, cross-pollination of people/projects, facilitation, revenue model, sponsors, where any surplus revenues should be allocated, ...you get the idea). We won't get this perfect on the first try, but we're stepping into the vulnerability with you and want to learn and grow together. And we'll keep all of you in the loop as this thing progresses.
It's our turn to listen. Will you share your thoughts with us? If you're inspired to riff on something now, great! If you want to sit on it and get back to us, great! Cooperators are standing by…
